Airport is a novel written by Arthur Hailey, published in 1968. The story takes place in the fictional Lincoln International Airport, Chicago, Illinois during the evening of Christmas Eve and morning of Christmas Day.
The main focus of the story is on the airport manager, Mel Bakersfeld, and the many issues that arise during a snowstorm that shuts down the airport. Other characters include Bakersfeld's estranged wife, a pilot and his stewardess girlfriend, a bomber, and various airport personnel.
The novel explores many themes including the challenges of modern air travel, family dynamics, love, and crime. It was a bestseller and is credited with popularizing the airport genre of novels and films.
In 1970, the novel was adapted into a film starring Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, and Jean Seberg. It was a critical and commercial success, earning ten Academy Award nominations and winning one for Best Supporting Actress.
